March 29, 2007: Save the Date
I'll be speaking at Hispanic Lifestyles 9th Annual Latina Conference in Ontario, CA on April 13th. I'll be taking part in the 'You' panel, as well as selling and selling copies of UIA. For specifics, check out the Contact page. Hope to see you there!
March 28, 2007: And He Bakes Too...
Patrick Sanchez sent me a box of homemade cookies and a lovely note for the pleasure of blurbing his next novel, Once Upon a Nervous Breakdown. How sweet is that?
March 26, 2007: More Insomnia
Yes, I'm still not sleeping through the night. Annoying. But I'm working on a few projects and waiting to hear back on a few more this week. (Maybe that's what's keeping me up at night?) But today is Monday and I love Mondays because I get to be alone (except for the dog) and concentrate on my writing (expect when interrupted by the dog's barking). Right now I'm working on a short story about Mrs. Mayor and it's a lot of fun. Oh, this Friday I'll be making the rounds at the NHLI's Latina Empowerment Conference. Looking forward to that.
March 20, 2007: How Exciting
A major bout of insomnia last night. It was so bad, I got out of bed and watched some TV (speed watched Prison Break and then was awake enough to watch Angle At My Table, even though I had the volume so low I missed some bits) and thought about turning on my computer, but I didn't. Then a few hours later as I was about to tra-la-la off to the post office to mail back LOE to my editor, I triggered my car alarm and it wouldn't move. I contemplated calling AAA but the brother-in-law came out, sleepy-looking and still in his boxers to give the wheel a good tug and all is now well. Wow. I wonder if Jackie Collins has days like these.
March 17, 2007: Making the Rounds
I've been a busy little writer these past days even though I haven't been doing any serious writing. Part of my job now is to network to get and keep the word out on UIA and promote LOE for its fall release. And, as such, I've been offering my services as a speaker to local libraries and conferences. Which brings me to lesson number one on how to make a publishing career: Don't be shy and just go ahead and ask if an event or library is looking for speakers. (I'm saving myself for bookstores until LOE comes out. More bang for everyone's buck or something like that.). All they can say is no, not this time and hopefully, they'll keep you in mind for another event (before which I'll make sure to touch base again.) And if they say yes, almost instant validation and time away from writing well spent. Nothing better than that. Which brings me to lesson number to: Always make sure to state right off the bat you're willing to do it for free.
March 12, 2007: Springtime for Newsletters
Can you feel it in the air? Yes, it's almost time for me to send out my Spring 2007 newsletter, but not until late April. If you'd like to receive it just sign up here. And, don't worry. I won't share or sell your email address. (I've finally gotten the hang of the miracle of blind Ccs.) I'll be running a signed book contest in the next couple of weeks, around the last week of March into thru first week of April so check back for an announcement.
March 12, 2007: The Copy Edit Review Continues
One big thing that's taken over my life is getting through my page-by-page copy edit triple check of Life Over Easy. Once I'm done (and I have to be done next week) LOE goes into production and I won't have a chance to make anything but the more dire of corrections when I get the laid out pages. No pressure, eh?
March 08, 2007: Back to Work
Just received the Life Over Easy copy edited manuscript. As this is my second time around in the process, I've promised myself not to freak out at all the notes and red marks. I'm going to read the whole thing line by line, even if it kills me. This also means I'll have to put my other project on hold for a bit to give this my full attention. This and Law & Order reruns. Wish me luck.
March 6 , 2007: News? What News?
I'm currently in proposal limbo an hope to hear about a few projects (either a yes or it's not for us) in the next few weeks. I've delved into the realm of young adult writing and considered going with a pen name (my middle name and the name school I once attended), but most likely will keep it all under the Margo Candela umbrella. What's a proposal, you may be asking? Basically once you write one or two books, editors will let you submit novels as ideas in the form of X amount of pages or words, sometimes as little as five pages, a synopsis, outline and the promise of your first born if you don't deliver. Just kidding. This has its advantages, you don't need to complete a whole novel to sell it, and its disadvantages, you don't have a reason to complete a whole novel. So while I'm waiting to hear, I've been working on TV series adaptation and spec script for an idea I've been kicking around for ages. But this time I got smart and am working with a writing partner (Hi, Paula!). It all so very L.A.
March 4 , 2007: So this is March
I've been concentrating on keeping the word out on UIA since the book isn't so shiny and new anymore. I've booked two speaking/signing engagements in May at libraries. I'm looking forward to them as I think its very important to give back to the community and hope to add more to the calendar. I've also been working on outside blogging submissions as a way to write something just for fun and its a good way to connect with readers. I'm also gearing up for a April trip to New York and have convinced my sister to come along with me. (No, it didn't take much work.)
